We’re Building a House!

If you had told me 5 years ago that I’d be in a long-term, wonderful relationship and buying my first home before I’m 30, I’d have laughed in your face. I mean seriously… I would have hee-hawed like a fricken donkey because let’s just say the last 5 years of my life haven’t exactly been kind and if you even knew half of the stuff I have been through prior to starting this blog a year ago, you would be laughing about me ever buying a house too.

I mean, there’s that whole thing where I quit my job a couple of weeks ago and then I found out that I have been driving on a suspended license for over a decade. And that’s just new stuff.

But somehow, here we are. We’re buying a house.

I knew the moment I saw the Linden floor plan by Lennar that I was in love and that was it. I mean once you find a house that you can’t find much that you don’t absolutely love about it and you start talking about where your Christmas tree is going to go – it’s kind of over. You know you’re going to buy that house given the chance.

That’s what we spent our week doing… finding a way to make it work.

Financing Our Home

We were pre-approved for our VA home loan by Navy Federal on Monday in the amount of $204,000 – a smidge more than we needed to build our home. It took all of 2 minutes for them to verify some information and then tell us we could have the money we need to build a house. Thing is, we decided we wanted to go with the builder’s lender because only then will the closing costs be paid by them. You would think that once you were approved by one place, getting approved at the next would be fairly easy. Nope.

I’m expecting them to ask for my next born any moment.

Maybe this whole thing wouldn’t seem so difficult if Jeremy and I weren’t communicating from two different states. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a big deal if either one of us had all of the papers we needed in order to make this happen. Maybe things would go more smoothly if we weren’t literally playing telephone.

It started off simple enough – he needed some papers found. It was things like his Navy discharge papers, divorce papers, W2’s and whatnot. All of these had to be located, scanned, converted to PDF format and emailed to him so he could email them to the lender. So I got them all together and realized: I don’t have a scanner any more since our all-in-one printer broke ages ago. Fantastic.

The friend living with us while they get on their feet fortunately has one. So I start having him scan papers for me. We’re going back and forth, scanning papers, converting them to PDF format, putting them on a flash drive, transferring from one computer to the next. It’s annoying, but doable… right?

Well we finally got it all together. It took us 3 days of back and forth, but we finally got it all together and to the lender so it can be processed.

We’re Building a House!

Can you believe it!? This is really happening! We have an appointment on Saturday, August 22nd to go look at the 2 lots available for building our first home. We’ll select a lot and start signing the papers!

So we’re one weekend away from signing the contract to break ground. The house should be finished in February, March at the latest. I can’t believe this is happening… and so fast! But I’m really excited to be going this route and I look forward to blogging about it every step of the way. Aren’t you excited!? You should be!

I’ve already started looking at furniture. We don’t have enough furniture for a house… not even close. I suspect we will be quite thankful to have most of Jeremy’s year-end bonus for furniture, decorations and paint rather than that all going to closing costs.
